Ever since the colonization of the New World the people of New England have been proudly designing weathervanes on cupolas or from high steeples in their towns and cities. You could say that weathervanes and cupolas are the outdoor decor of New England and especially Maine. Today we are sending out weathervanes in large quantities to the western seaboard as weathervanes become more and more popular as outdoor decor throughout the USA and the rest of North America.

The Weathervane Factory is proud to continue this American tradition by offering top quality weathervanes and cupolas for eye catching outdoor decor to our customers. We are always thrilled to get a photo back of your weathervane and cupola on your homes, barns and outbuildings when you have them installed.

Please note that all emailed photos of your cupola and weathervane may be used on our website in our photo gallery. If you do not wish to have your photo of your weathervane and cupola displayed on our website – please comment on this before sending – we will always respect our customer’s wishes.

A common question that we get all the time is which way does the weathervane point. Well weathervanes will always point into the direction of the wind. So if your weathervane is going the wrong way – something could be wrong such as a tree or other large object that is making the wind swirl. The best place for a weathervane is up high if you wish to get a good wind reading. This is one of the reasons that weathervanes are typically attached to cupolas. More recently weathervanes are being used as outdoor decor in and around the garden. The weathervanes that are lower to the ground do not always give the best wind direction readings because of swirling winds, but they will really add that special fun touch to the outdoor decor. So please think wisely before adding one to the garden – look around and make sure you have a clear wind path to the weathervane if not – then the weathervane will be used as a beautiful outdoor decor weathervane.

So whether you are looking for a weathervane for your home, barn or outdoor decor we are sure to have the right weathervane for you.

Great outdoor decor is a cupola with a weathervane perched on its peak.

Need a cupola? Our cupolas are made from Cypress or PVC and both are maintenance free cupola. We have really large cupolas up to 72” Square and over 130” tall or just nice little shed cupolas. So have fun browsing our cupolas they will really add that special touch to your outdoor decor today.

Our Window Cupolas are made for decoration only; add a light and your night outdoor decor will come alive. Even a light in our louvered cupolas will look impressive and these you can set up to vent your attic, barn or out building. All of our cupolas are weathervane ready with a ¾” hole in the top and an internal brace support built into the inside of the roof of the cupola. This will enable the weathervane to take stronger winds.

Please note that none of our cupolas require a weathervane mount with the cupola. Mounts are only for people that do not wish to put a cupola on their home. Now if you have a homemade cupola – then you may need a mount if your cupola is not weathervane ready.

How to Choose Cupolas for your specific Outdoor Decor

You can choose the perfect model from our selection of cupolas here. When choosing one for your structure, it is important to choose a size that complements and balances the building. A good rule of thumb is 1 1/4 inches of cupola roof for every foot of unbroken ridgeline. A 24 foot roof, therefore, should have a 30” cupola. The size will also determine how many windows or louvers the cupola has.

Furthermore, if you plan on using a weathervane, the cupola and weathervane should create a balanced appearance, in terms of both size and design.

If you have a long roofline – then you may be interested in going with the traditional cupola selection method. Try adding 2, 3 or four smaller cupolas to the length of the home or building. Example: a 60’ roofline would look great with two 36” or 42” cupolas.
