There are many things that have been made throughout humanity's history that was both beautiful and functional at the same time. There come times, however, when the things that were useful as well as beautiful stop having a function other than some sort of aesthetic value. Certainly there is nothing wrong with this occurrence, but it is always interesting to note how some things never seem to have the same function that they did a few decades ago. Take for example the appearance of garage cupolas. These decorative elements used to be more than just decorative though they have started being nothing more than something nice to add. Garage cupolas are descendents of the ancient cupolas that were placed on various buildings in many different kinds of architecture. While the term cupola is used generally to refer to any sort of dome structure that has a tower of sorts on top of it, many civilizations had designs that were quite close to this but differed in specific ways. While they had different names, the term cupola remains with many of them and is used to refer, in general, to architectural elements that have this characteristic. For the most part garage cupolas resemble the cupolas that were added to barns. In fact it is from the cupolas on the barns that the cupolas on garages came from. The original purpose of the cupolas on the barns was to provide ventilation. A large building like a barn that is not insulated against the climate may have some trouble during the summer months when the sun beats down on it the whole day. The cupolas added a bit of ventilation to the structure by allowing the warm air that has a tendency to travel upwards, to escape through the cupolas thereby cooling down the barn on a general level. Garage cupolas can also have this function. More often not, however, they are used simply as a decorative element that is added to the garage. There are many prefabricated cupolas that can simply be added the existing structure of the barn with just a little work. While the cupola on a garage can certainly provide the same ventilation that a cupola on a barn does, that is rarely the reason why someone would add a cupola to the roof of a garage. In any case, the addition of a cupola may lead to water damage in the garage unless it is a solid cupola. So if the cupola on your garage is nothing more than decoration, it is a better idea to go for a solid one. Garage cupolas are one of the many culminations of architectural design throughout the ages. They can add a certain sophisticated decorative flair to any garage and can vastly improve the aesthetic appeal of what is normally a rather standard building attached to the home. Since they are available in all sorts of different styles and forms you can find the specific cupola that will turn your garage into something special.
